Do you know your DRSABCDs?
The DRSABCD action plan is used to assess a patient’s condition and if they require immediate first aid. It involves seven steps:
D = DANGER
Check for any danger in the immediate vicinity and ensure the area is safe for you, others and the patient.
R = RESPONSE
Check if the casualty is responsive. Ask them their name, ask if they’re okay, squeeze their shoulders.
If there is a response:
Make them comfortable
Check for injuries
Monitor their response.
S = SEND FOR HELP
Call triple zero (000) for an ambulance or ask someone else to make the call.
A = AIRWAY
Clear any obstruction of the airways if possible.
B = BREATHING
Check the casualty’s breathing. If it is normal:
Place them in the recovery position
Monitor their breathing
Manage their injuries
Treat them for shock
If their breathing is not normal (less than 2 breaths in 10 seconds), start CPR.
C = CPR
Start CPR: 30 chest compressions followed by 2 breaths.
Continue this until help arrives or the casualty recovers.
D = DEFIBRILLATION
Attach an AED (defibrillator) as soon as possible if there’s one available, and follow the voice prompts.
Stay with your casualty until help arrives.
